Five for Friday September 25: Celebrating Success in Advancing Medication Use Quality

PQA is developing the Pharmacy Quality Recognition Program (PQRP) to help distinguish those community pharmacies that consistently deliver high-quality care and are ready to engage in value-based arrangements. The program will be the focus of the 2026 PQA Leadership Summit, November 5-6, in Arlington, Va.

PQRP is a voluntary program that evaluates and recognizes community pharmacies that demonstrate their commitment to continuous quality improvement, health equity, patient-centered collaborative care, and data exchange capabilities. Learn more about the program and summit below.

We also highlight our members’ perspectives on MTM, pharmacy care coordination and pharmacy access. If you have news you’d like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!

Advancing MTM Services

As MTM evolves and pharmacies prepare for increased demand, what does success look like from both the technology side and the pharmacy operations side? Ross Frei of Outcomes provides perspective of innovation, workflow transformation, and MTM Intelligence. “We have been laser focused on creating that workflow that allows pharmacies to take MTM and clinical service provision in the pharmacy to that next level.”

Studying Pharmacy Care Coordination for Cancer Patients

Humana researchers found that cancer patients who received specialty pharmacy care coordination services had fewer hospitalizations and emergency department visits, along with lower medical costs. The study analyzed health outcomes for people with cancer with Part D prescription plan coverage and who received medication adherence care coordination guidance, as compared to those who opted out of coordination.

Extending Access to Rural Communities

Kyle DeMontigny, pharmacy manager at Thrifty White Pharmacy, shares what retail pharmacy can learn from a rural pharmacist and how to fill healthcare gaps in a rural environment. “In rural areas, we are really trying to make sure that we reach out and bring services to them. We utilize medication synchronization to make sure we can get their medications together at one time, saving them trips to the pharmacy.”

PQA’s Pharmacy Quality Recognition Program

As healthcare increasingly focuses on quality measurement, patient outcomes, and coordinated care, PQA recognized the need for a program that identifies and distinguishes community pharmacies committed to continuous quality improvement and patient-centered care.

The Pharmacy Quality Recognition Program (PQRP) builds on PQA’s long-standing leadership in pharmacy quality measurement and takes a holistic approach to evaluating pharmacy capabilities, services, and quality practices. The program offers a structured framework to strengthen quality capabilities, support operational and clinical transformation, and prepare for participation in value-based payment opportunities.

Organizations interested in learning more about the program are encouraged to attend the 2026 PQA Leadership Summit, which is solely focused on the PQRP. Attendees will be the first to hear details of the collaborative development process, the program’s future launch, and insights from panelists representing the healthcare continuum.
