For 20 years, PQA has brought together diverse stakeholders with a shared commitment to improving the quality of medication use and advancing health outcomes.
When PQA was established in 2006, health care was beginning to shift toward greater accountability and value. As PQA Chief Executive Officer Micah Cost reflects, “When PQA was formed, the idea was that we were building a value-based construct.” That vision laid the foundation for an organization dedicated to developing meaningful measures, fostering collaboration and driving quality improvement.
From the beginning, PQA’s strength has been its ability to unite stakeholders around a common purpose. PQA Chief Executive Officer Emeritus Laura Cranston recalls, “What impressed me most about the various stakeholders that … when they came to PQA, they were committed to that vision and the mission and came to the forefront of PQA for the sole purpose to stand up a set of quality measures.”
Over the years, health care has evolved dramatically, but PQA has remained focused on its mission. Larry Kocot notes, “The greatest accomplishment that PQA has had is remaining a constant in a changing health care system.”
Today, PQA continues to lead efforts to improve medication use quality while adapting. Looking towards the future, former CMS Administrator Mark McClellan reflects on the organization’s enduring purpose: “I think PQA remains relevant today; the core challenge that brought it together … that challenge still exists. We’ve made a lot of progress, but there is so much more that’s possible in the future.”
As we continue to celebrate PQA’s 20th anniversary, we thank the members, volunteers and leaders who have shaped this journey. Together, PQA and its members have advanced quality medication use, improved health care quality and created a strong foundation for the future.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey, and together, we will continue to shape the future of medication use quality.
